The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a minor trade on Tuesday that could have different implications for both sides, sending right-handed pitcher José Rodríguez to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for fellow right-hander Sebastian Rodríguez.
While the major-league trade deadline has already passed, clubs can still complete trades involving minor leaguers. The move gives Toronto a pitcher who has reached the upper levels of the organization, while the Dodgers add a much younger arm with considerably more development ahead of him.
José Rodríguez, 25, was signed by Los Angeles as an international free agent out of Mexico in 2019. After progressing through the organization, he has established himself as a strikeout-oriented pitcher capable of missing bats at the Triple-A level.
His biggest obstacle has been his command.
Since the beginning of the 2025 season, Rodríguez has worked 88 2/3 innings, primarily in Triple-A, posting a 4.67 ERA. He has struck out 33.2 percent of the batters he has faced during that stretch, demonstrating the type of swing-and-miss ability that could make him an intriguing bullpen option.
However, his 14 percent walk rate has limited his overall effectiveness. The combination of strikeout potential and inconsistent control has made Rodríguez an interesting but imperfect pitching prospect as he attempts to make the jump to the majors.
Rodríguez has a diverse arsenal, with his fastballs generally sitting around 96 mph. He also has a changeup, cutter, slider and curveball in his repertoire. His changeup has emerged as one of his better offerings, while his slider gives him another pitch capable of generating swings and misses.
Toronto is taking a chance that those tools can translate into more consistent results. With Rodríguez already experienced against upper-level competition, the Blue Jays could view him as a potential depth option who may be able to contribute sooner rather than later if his command improves.
For the Dodgers, the decision appears to be more focused on the long term.
Instead of potentially losing Rodríguez during the offseason without receiving anything in return, Los Angeles has acquired a 20-year-old pitcher who has only recently begun his professional career. Sebastian Rodríguez signed with Toronto internationally this summer and has made a brief debut in the Dominican Summer League.
His early results have been mixed. Across nine innings, he has allowed six earned runs while recording 11 strikeouts. He has also surrendered six hits, issued three walks and hit one batter, while four wild pitches indicate that there is plenty of refinement still required.
That makes Sebastian Rodríguez a considerably different type of acquisition than the player Los Angeles is sending away.
The Dodgers are giving up an experienced minor league pitcher who is closer to the majors in exchange for a younger developmental project. Given the organization's pitching depth and the uncertainty surrounding José Rodríguez's path to a major league opportunity, the move gives Los Angeles another lottery-ticket arm to develop.
For Toronto, the trade represents the opposite approach. The Blue Jays are sacrificing a long-term project for a pitcher who has already reached Triple-A and possesses the strikeout ability to potentially become a bullpen option.
Neither Rodríguez is a finished product, but the trade gives both organizations a chance to address different areas of their pitching pipelines.
