Dodgers' Vesia Projected to Earn $25 Million in Free Agency

The reliable southpaw faces a massive pay raise following a career-best campaign, forcing Los Angeles to decide if his elite bullpen production justifies a lucrative multi-year commitment.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have quite a few players hitting free agency this offseason.

One of those is left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia. Vesia, 30, has been with the Dodgers since 2021.

He sports a career 2.87 ERA, and that number would be far better without the 18.69 ERA outlier he had in five appearances as a rookie in 2020.

Regardless, he's proven his worth time and time again. There doesn't seem to be any concern if he would sign a two-year, $25 million deal like ESPN's Kiley McDaniel predicts, but there's a strong chance he signs elsewhere.

It's not like the Dodgers don't have the money to bring him back; they absolutely do. It just comes down to where they're going to spend it, and that $25 million could be used elsewhere, even though this team needs to make sure the bullpen remains a priority.

Will Dodgers truly let Vesia walk?

Remember, the Dodgers only had to pay Vesia $3.65 million this season as it was his final year of arbitration.

His new contract is going to be over triple that for just the 2027 season alone, but it's a well-deserved pay raise for a guy who's coming off one of the best seasons of his career.

Vesia was a 1.5 WAR player this season, and it's worth noting that was in 72 games. This marked the first time he pitched in more than 68 games in a single season, and previously, his career high WAR was 1.6 in 2024 when he appeared in 67 games.

Vesia's WHIP went above 1.00 for the first time since 2023, but it's still in a really solid spot at 1.07.

The free agency market will have to take what it can get as his ERA fell from 3.02 to 2.64, though his WHIP increased from 0.99 to 1.07.

Keep in mind, Vesia may have appeared in his most career games, but he still only threw 58.0 innings this season. That's his lowest single-season total since the 49.2 he threw in '23 when he was a -0.1 WAR player.

According to McDaniel, Vesia is the No. 27 player on the market. He'll be 31 years old sooner rather than later, but that won't mean much if he truly is seeking a two-year deal with an AAV at $12.5 million.

In theory, that's still a lot of money to be paying a non-closer, but Vesia is fresh off a 20-hold season where he had three saves and only blew two all year.
