The Los Angeles Dodgers have added additional outfield depth by claiming Jack Suwinski off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.
Pittsburgh recently designated Suwinski for assignment in order to clear a 40-man roster spot following the addition of Marcell Ozuna.
Suwinski, 27, now joins a new organization after two uneven seasons that followed a promising breakout campaign earlier in his career.
During that breakout year, the left-handed hitter showed significant power and speed, establishing himself as a potential long-term piece in the Pirates’ outfield.
However, consistency proved difficult to maintain, and his offensive production dipped over the past two seasons as strikeouts became a recurring issue.
Last season, Suwinski opened the year on Pittsburgh’s major-league roster but struggled to gain traction at the plate and was eventually optioned to Triple-A.
He split time between the majors and minors, appearing in limited big-league action while performing far better offensively in the minor leagues.
Despite flashes of power, he was unable to reclaim a steady role before roster changes pushed him further down the depth chart.
The Pirates’ offseason moves also contributed to Suwinski becoming expendable. With multiple additions and lineup restructuring, opportunities became scarce.
Once the club solidified its designated hitter situation, the path to regular playing time for Suwinski narrowed even more, ultimately leading to his removal from the roster.
For the Dodgers, the move represents a low-risk opportunity to evaluate a player who has previously demonstrated power potential at the major-league level.
The Dodgers already feature a strong projected outfield group, including Teoscar Hernández, Andy Pages, and Kyle Tucker, leaving Suwinski to compete for a depth role during camp.
Suwinski’s defensive versatility could help his case, though he will likely need to show improved contact consistency to secure a roster spot.
Ultimately, the Dodgers are betting that a change of scenery and their player development system can help Suwinski rediscover the form that once made him a promising prospect a few seasons ago.
