The Los Angeles Dodgers’ roster shuffle continued Friday when outfielder Michael Siani was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees, cutting short his time in the organization less than a month after he was added.
Siani, 26, was claimed by the Dodgers on December 12 after being designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves. While his stay in Los Angeles never resulted in an on-field appearance at the Major League level, the move initially represented another example of the Dodgers taking a low-risk look at a versatile, defense-first outfielder with speed.
Instead, Siani now heads to New York, where the Yankees were willing to add him to their 40-man roster in search of outfield depth and athleticism. To make room, New York designated right-hander Kaleb Ort for assignment.
For the Dodgers, Siani’s departure is more about roster flexibility than production lost. Siani was designated for assignment by the Dodgers to clear a 40-man roster spot following the addition of Kyle Tucker.
Still, Siani brings a skill set that often appeals to teams on the margins of the roster. Across parts of four Major League seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals, he has appeared in 160 games, hitting .221 with 21 stolen bases while seeing time at all three outfield spots.
His primary value has come in center field, where his range and instincts have stood out more than his bat.
In 2025, Siani spent most of the season at Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals’ system. Over 101 games, he hit .209 with eight home runs, 41 RBIs, 50 walks, and 28 stolen bases, while playing mostly center field but also logging innings in left and right.
The patience and speed combination continued to make him an intriguing depth option, even as the overall offensive numbers lagged behind.
Originally selected by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Siani has now been claimed by four different organizations since August 2023, underscoring how teams value his defensive profile even if he hasn’t yet settled into a permanent Major League role.
For the Dodgers, the waiver loss opens another 40-man spot as they continue to fine-tune their roster heading into the 2026 season. For Siani, it’s another fresh opportunity—this time in pinstripes—to stick at the big league level.
