Shohei Ohtani’s disciplined return from injury provides a vital boost, signaling his mechanics and health are peaking just as the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for a deep postseason run.
Shohei Ohtani returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup Wednesday, providing an encouraging development as the team prepares to complete another dominant regular season.
Los Angeles suffered a 5-1 home loss to the San Diego Padres, but Ohtani’s first game since Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Reds gave manager Dave Roberts a positive takeaway with the postseason approaching.
A long-awaited return
The Japanese superstar has dealt with left knee and right biceps injuries throughout the season. His return suggests that he is moving toward being available when the Dodgers need him most.
According to SportsNet LA, Roberts said Ohtani looked good despite producing modest results. The manager was encouraged by the quality of his plate appearances, his refusal to chase pitches and the hard contact he created.
Ohtani also narrowly missed hitting a home run. Roberts believed the slugger remained under control and did not appear rushed despite his lengthy absence.
“He looked good,” Roberts said.
“At-bat quality was good. There wasn’t any chase. He hit the ball hard, just missed a homer. It’s been a while since he played. It felt like he wasn’t sped up at all.”
Ohtani, who had previously emerged as a candidate for both the National League Cy Young Award and MVP, went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk and two strikeouts.
Before being sidelined, Ohtani had struggled with his swing. The physical discomfort appeared to force him into compensating with his mechanics, limiting his effectiveness at the plate.
Those problems were not evident Wednesday, even during a relatively quiet return.
Roberts noted that Ohtani had been unable to reach a particular pitch during the final couple of weeks before his absence. His contact against that location Wednesday provided evidence that he is in a much better physical position.
“I think if you look back at the last couple weeks when he was active, he wasn’t really getting to that pitch,” Roberts explained.
“Tonight showed that he’s in a good spot physically.”
The Dodgers can use their final four regular season games to help Ohtani regain his timing before the postseason begins.
Ohtani might not be completely healthy or performing at the highest level of his remarkable ability, but his presence still changes the way opponents approach Los Angeles.
Ohtani’s importance
Ohtani creates pressure before stepping into the batter’s box. Pitchers understand that one poorly located offering can immediately change the game, forcing them to work carefully through every plate appearance.
Ohtani also possesses the discipline to punish that caution. His willingness to take pitches outside the strike zone can produce walks and force opponents into counts where they must challenge him.
The absence of unnecessary chasing during his return was therefore particularly encouraging. It showed that Ohtani trusted his swing and did not attempt to manufacture immediate results after missing several weeks.
His ability to remain composed also matters during a short preparation window. Ohtani does not need to prove everything in one game. He needs to recognize pitches, make hard contact and gradually recover his rhythm.
Even when his numbers are quiet, the quality of his at-bats can indicate whether his body and timing are responding properly. Wednesday offered the Dodgers those encouraging signs.
Ohtani is back in the lineup, and his combination of power, patience and presence remains a dangerous sight for every postseason opponent.
