The Los Angeles Dodgers opened their season the way manager Dave Roberts envisioned — grinding out at-bats, relentless pressure, and timely execution from top to bottom.
Speaking after the Opening Day win, Roberts emphasized how the lineup’s collective approach wore down the Arizona Diamondbacks pitching, highlighting quality at-bats throughout the order.
“Just grinded at-bats,” Roberts said. “Top to bottom, everyone contributed in some way.”
Even in moments where results didn’t show, the process stood out. Freddie Freeman, Roberts noted, squared up multiple balls but found little luck, while Shohei Ohtani consistently found his way on base.
That persistence paid off later as the bottom of the order delivered a decisive blow with a three-run homer from Andy Pages that flipped the game.
“That’s kind of how we structured this lineup,” Roberts said. “And it played out like that.”
The Dodgers’ offensive depth, particularly in the lower third, continues to separate them. Roberts described the group as “relentless,” pointing to the mental and physical toll it puts on opposing pitchers forced to navigate every spot in the order without reprieve.
“When you feel like you have to be perfect, it’s tough,” Roberts said. “As long as we stay disciplined, we’ll have chances to put up big numbers.”
On the mound, Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered an equally important performance — not because it was dominant, but because of how he adjusted. After surrendering a home run early, Yamamoto settled in and battled through six innings despite not having his best stuff.
“To take that punch and rebound, that was impressive,” Roberts said.
A key moment came in his final frame. Yamamoto worked a clean inning that allowed Roberts to avoid taxing his bullpen earlier than planned. That efficiency altered the game’s late-inning strategy and preserved key arms.
Defensively, Roberts also praised the play in center field, noting continued growth and consistency from a player who has worked extensively to solidify the position.
“His jumps, his routes, the arm — it’s all there,” Roberts said. “He’s a complete player.”
Roberts also pointed to contributions from the bullpen, including an encouraging outing from Tanner Scott, who showed improved command and pitch usage.
“It’s a new season,” Roberts said. “Let’s keep it going.”
For Roberts, the significance of Opening Day extends beyond the standings. With anticipation high and a packed crowd on hand, delivering a win provided an early spark.
“They all count the same,” he said, “but the first one is nice to get.”
