Veteran slugger and five solid innings out of Adrian Houser powered the San Francisco Giants past the Detroit Tigers.
The San Francisco Giants thought they were going to have a stellar dynamic duo with Willy Adames and Rafael Devers, but sadly, things haven't worked out that way.
That's not to say they can't get back on track in the future, but this 2026 season is a lost cause, even after the Giants took down the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, to improve to 49-67.
It's no secret that the Tigers were major sellers at the deadline, and that's crazy to say knowing they're only four games under .500.
San Francisco made a ton of moves to bring in young, hungry talent, but it was a pair of crafty veterans who each hit a home run, combining for three of the team's five runs driven in.
Devers set the tone
This is a Tigers team that no longer has Tarik Skubal or Casey Mize, but they were able to get six solid innings out of 26-year-old Keider Montero.
The Venezuelan native ended up allowing all five of the Giants' runs, and it only took five hits to do so.
Detroit jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning against JT Brubaker, someone who was used as an opener for the Giants.
Regardless, Devers came to the plate in the bottom of the first with Jung Hoo Lee at first base. With two outs, Devers won a five-pitch battle that saw him crush an 80 mph knuckle curve, 401 feet to center field.
The Giants led, 2-1, and while the Tigers would tie it in the top of the second, San Francisco made sure they answered immediately.
Lee's single extends Giants lead; Adames adds insurance
Manager Tony Vitello had Adrian Houser come out of the bullpen, but he immediately gave up a run in the second. Thankfully, he was able to get settled in, and he would go on to pitch a team-high five innings in this game.
Houser is now 3-7 on the year as he picked up his first win since Sunday, May 17.
Lee was the sixth hitter to come to the plate in the second, and he made sure the Giants got their lead right back as he singled a four-seam fastball that would score Drew Gilbert and Osleivis Basabe.
Fast forward to the fifth inning, and Adames would respond to Devers' homer earlier in the night with one of his own. The 30-year-old got just enough of an 87-mph changeup, so the Giants truly had Montero's number as they scored their five runs on three different pitches.
Officially, Devers still leads the team with 24 home runs while Adames isn't too far behind at 19.
