With the Tampa Bay Rays eyeing Luis Arraez, the San Francisco Giants face a pivotal choice: Capitalize on his trade value or risk blocking rising stars Bryce Eldridge and Casey Schmitt.
The San Francisco Giants know they have a pair of young studs who are rising through the organization, but where does second baseman Luis Arraez fit into the equation?
The 29-year-old isn't nearly as old as some of the other players on this team, but there's no better time to trade him than now.
According to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale, the Tampa Bay Rays have expressed interest in acquiring the Venezuelan native.
Knowing the Rays currently are the American League East Division leaders and have the best record in the AL, San Francisco could use that as leverage to finalize a deal ahead of the trade deadline.
Giants must take advantage of Rays' interest
"The Rays, who suddenly are seeing that the AL is wide open for the taking, plan to be aggressive buyers at the deadline," Nightengale wrote. "They not only have their eyes on [Tarik] Skubal, but they have shown interest in seeing whether the Diamondbacks would move second baseman Ketel Marte and Giants All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez as a backup plan."
Even if Arraez is a backup plan, it's still notable his name was ever mentioned to begin with. Remember, this is a Giants team that needs to find room for both Casey Schmitt and Bryce Eldridge.
Eldridge, 21, is too good to be kept out of the lineup. Schmitt, 27, isn't exactly that much younger than Arraez, but he also costs just $810,000 instead of the $12 million price tag Arraez carries.
Should Giants trade Arraez or extend him?
Nightengale continued, "While the Giants love having second baseman Luis Arraez, who’s willing to sign an extension, the cold-hearted truth is that they need to clear infield spots for Casey Schmitt and Bryce Eldridge, leaving Arraez out of the picture. They also already have six players earning more than $20 million this year."
Most of this team's major contracts have backfired, so one could only imagine what happens with Arraez if they go in that direction. There's no telling as to how he'll even look in the second half of the 2026 season, but it's clear the Rays are liking what they've seen so far.
The Giants already announced they were going to be sellers, it's just a matter of how much of a fire sale takes place. Arraez is going to be a name to monitor for quite some time, but it's notable that an AL contender has expressed interest prior to the All-Star break.
