According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the San Francisco Giants are expected to be sellers ahead of the MLB trade deadline at the end of July.

The Giants currently hold one of the worst records in both the National League and Major League Baseball at 29-43, sitting 16.5 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

Several players are likely to generate trade interest, including Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, Luis Arraez, and Robbie Ray. However, Rafael Devers stands out as one of the most intriguing names in the conversation.

Just one season into his Giants tenure, Devers has unexpectedly found himself at the center of trade speculation.

Between the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Devers has appeared in 162 games and accumulated 616 at-bats. During that span, he has posted a .235 batting average, a .323 on-base percentage, and a .762 OPS.

His 2026 campaign, in particular, has been a struggle. Through 72 games and 281 at-bats, Devers has hit nine home runs while batting .235 with a .293 on-base percentage and a .413 slugging percentage. His .706 OPS and 101 OPS+ place him roughly around league-average offensively.

When the Giants acquired Devers from the Boston Red Sox in 2025, it appeared the organization had finally landed the type of star player it had been searching for after repeatedly missing out on marquee free agents.

Given how public Devers' frustrations in Boston had become, the trade presented an opportunity for Devers and the Giants.

That opportunity came on June 15, when San Francisco acquired Devers in a blockbuster deal that included Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, James Tibbs, and Jose Bello heading to Boston.

The Giants gave up a significant amount of talent in that trade.

The expectation from President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey was that the move would help return the organization to a competitive nature in the National League West.

For context, the Giants have not won the division since 2022 and have struggled to establish consistent success in the years since.

Devers was not expected to single-handedly transform the franchise, but he was viewed as a major piece of a renewed competitive window. Combined with the fact that he is under contract through 2033, many believed he would serve as one of the organization's foundational players for years to come.

Instead, questions are already beginning to emerge about whether he will remain with the team beyond this season.

If the Giants choose to move Devers, he would likely represent one of their most valuable trade chips. The organization could explore ways to absorb part of his contract in exchange for younger players or higher-end prospects.

At the same time, there remains a path where the Giants keep Devers and continue building around him despite the team's current struggles.

Either way, moving a contract of that size would be complicated. Still, if the Giants fully embrace a sell-off at the trade deadline, Devers is certain to be one of the most closely watched names in the organization.
