After a whirlwind journey, Camilo Doval returns to the Bay Area determined to reclaim his command and anchor the San Francisco Giants’ bullpen next year.
Camilo Doval has experienced considerable change since the San Francisco Giants traded him at last year’s deadline.
He has been traded twice, designated for assignment once and claimed off waivers once. He is finally back in the Bay Area and hopes to remain there.
Giants' Doval feels at home
According to Alex Pavlovic from NBC Sports Bay Area, Doval described San Francisco as his home and made clear that this is where he wants to continue pitching.
“This is where I want to be. This is my home,” Doval said.
The Giants activated Doval on Friday and optioned Cesar Perdomo to Triple-A Sacramento. Doval then recorded three strikeouts in a scoreless inning during Saturday’s 4-3 home loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
San Francisco traded Doval to the New York Yankees in July 2025 for four players, receiving a significant return for a reliever capable of solving high-leverage problems.
Doval was 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 46.2 innings over 47 appearances, converting 15 of 19 save opportunities with the Giants last year.
Randy Rodriguez’s emergence allowed the Giants to trade Doval, who had been optioned to the minor leagues in 2024 to recover his command.
Doval went 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 18.2 innings across 22 appearances for New York, converting one of three save opportunities.
He began this season with the Yankees but could not rediscover his 2025 efficiency. Doval went 3-1 with a 4.54 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 39.2 innings over 44 appearances while opponents hit .250.
New York traded him to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the deadline for two players.
His numbers improved slightly with Pittsburgh. Doval went 0-1 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 19 innings across 20 appearances, although opponents hit .271. The Pirates designated him for assignment earlier this week.
Returning to San Francisco could benefit Doval. His best season came with the Giants in 2023, when he earned National League All-Star honors.
He went 6-6 with a 2.93 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 67.2 innings over 69 appearances, converting 39 of 47 save opportunities while opponents hit .209.
That followed his 2022 breakthrough, when Doval went 6-6 with a 2.53 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 67.2 innings across 68 appearances. He converted 27 of 30 save opportunities while opponents hit .218.
Doval’s future with ballclub
The Giants signed Doval as a teenager from the Dominican Republic in 2015 and were the only organization he knew before the trade.
His powerful arsenal and experience in pressure situations give him another opportunity to stabilize San Francisco’s bullpen. Doval must regain his command, attack hitters confidently and avoid allowing difficult appearances to affect the next opportunity.
Now 29, he will spend the offseason with his original organization while attempting to earn a 2027 roster place. San Francisco’s failure to address its bullpen last offseason proved costly in 2026.
Doval has one year of team control remaining and one more chance to prove his long-term future belongs in the Bay Area.
