A potential blockbuster trade looms as two struggling San Francisco Giants and New York Mets stars seek a fresh start.
There doesn't seem to be a world where the San Francisco Giants are buyers at the trade deadline, but they were recently linked to New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor.
Lindor, 32, is experiencing a down year. Seeing as the Mets are nowhere near where they should be, it makes all the sense in the world to see New York shopping a few players at this year's deadline.
Recently, The Athletic said Lindor could be a potential fit for San Francisco. In no world does this seem super realistic, but it's at least a possibility worth exploring.
Currently in the middle of his 10-year, $341 million deal, the last thing this Giants team needs is another struggling veteran on a monster contract. That said, the Giants seem interested in moving guys like Rafael Devers and Willy Adames, so who truly knows what could end up happening.
Could the Giants and Mets work out a deal?
Straight up, Adames for Lindor could be one of the most intriguing deals at the deadline. Both have massive price tags attached to their name, and they're both everyday shortstops who are nowhere near where they used to be.
Together, Tim Britton, Johnny Flores Jr., Chad Jennings, and Eno Sarris discussed where things stand with Lindor at the deadline, "The hurdles between the Mets and a Lindor trade are high and plentiful: The shortstop is owed $160 million over the next five years, and while he’s in the midst of a down season, he’s still projected to be among the game’s best shortstops moving forward.
"However, New York’s season has gone downhill enough that the club is not definitively ruling out much, and the deadline can make for some surprising decisions."
Currently in his sixth year with the Mets, Lindor is slashing .220/.303/.387. Throughout his big-league career, which dates back to 2015, his average slash line is .272/.341/.473. Clearly, these numbers are nowhere near where he usually is at all.
Change of scenery could do wonders
Adames is two years younger than Lindor, but he's set to be under contract through 2031. This team gave him more money than Buster Posey got back in the day, so it's clear just how high they were on him. At this point in 2026, Adames remains inconsistent at the plate.
No one expected a Giants and Mets trade to make the most noise at the deadline, but the Giants have plenty of players they're shopping around, and the only way they can bring in Lindor is if they free up contracts elsewhere.
