Shortstop Willy Adames exited Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves after experiencing lower back spasms, creating uncertainty surrounding his availability for the start of San Francisco's trip to Chase Field.
MRI Scheduled to Determine Severity
Adames remained in the game through the seventh inning but appeared uncomfortable after striking out to end the frame. He was replaced defensively by Casey Schmitt before the eighth inning.
Following the game, Adames revealed that the discomfort wasn't new. According to the veteran infielder, the back issue first surfaced during the Giants' previous series against the Athletics before worsening throughout Sunday's contest.
To better evaluate the injury, Adames is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday after the team arrives in Arizona. The results will determine whether he can remain in the lineup or requires time away from the club.
Giants Forced to Adjust Infield
Adames' departure came at a critical time for San Francisco, which entered Sunday's game with limited infield depth.
Schmitt had originally been slated to start in left field but was scratched before first pitch because of a viral illness circulating through the clubhouse. Despite not feeling fully healthy, he was pressed into action at shortstop after Adames exited.
The Giants were also operating with one fewer infielder after designating Buddy Kennedy for assignment earlier in the day to make room on the active roster for the return of outfielder Heliot Ramos.
Internal Options Available
If Adames is unable to play against Arizona, Schmitt figures to receive the first opportunity at shortstop.
Another possibility is Christian Koss, who has been sidelined since late May with a fractured left wrist. Koss recently began a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League, putting him in position to rejoin the organization if the Giants determine additional infield depth is necessary.
San Francisco will likely have more clarity once Adames' MRI results are available, but the club could be preparing contingency plans ahead of Monday's opener against the Diamondbacks if their everyday shortstop is unavailable.
