Barry Bonds shared a story on Wednesday night about how a contract demand from the New York Yankees led him to join Giants.
In a candid retelling, Barry Bonds offered a glimpse into one of baseball’s great “what-if” scenarios, revealing just how close he came to joining the New York Yankees during the 1992 offseason.
At the time, Bonds was one of the most coveted free agents in baseball, coming off a dominant run with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yankees, eager to restore their status as a powerhouse, emerged as a serious suitor. According to Bonds, the interest was not only real — it nearly resulted in a deal.
“I would have been a Yankee,” Bonds said while taking part in Netflix's MLB coverage on Wednesday night. He detailed the moment negotiations took an unexpected turn. He recalled receiving a call from Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who was known for his aggressive approach to building a winner.
The offer itself wasn’t the issue. In fact, Bonds said the Yankees were prepared to make him the highest-paid player in the game at the time. However, the urgency attached to the proposal proved to be a dealbreaker.
Bonds explained that he was told he needed to accept the contract by 2 p.m. that same day. The tight deadline caught him off guard and ultimately forced a quick reaction.
“Excuse me?” Bonds recalled thinking, stunned by the demand. Rather than rushing into a life-altering decision, he ended the call and stepped away to process what had just happened.
Bonds initially stepped away to grab lunch, still processing the situation, but after a follow-up call with his agent Dennis Gilbert, the weight of the Yankees’ ultimatum set in—and his decision became clear.
“I said, forget it,” Bonds recounted.
That moment proved pivotal. Instead of continuing negotiations with New York, Bonds shifted his focus elsewhere. Shortly after, the San Francisco Giants reached out, offering a more comfortable and less rushed approach.
Bonds chose San Francisco, a decision that would go on to define his career. With the Giants, he became one of the most dominant players in baseball history, ultimately setting the all-time home run record and cementing his legacy in the sport.
Looking back, Bonds acknowledged how differently things might have played out had he accepted the Yankees’ terms.
Still, the decision he made in that moment shaped not only his career, but the trajectory of multiple franchises — leaving behind one of the most fascinating near-deals in MLB history.
