The San Francisco Giants have reunited with veteran catcher Eric Haase, signing the 33-year-old to a new minor-league contract just weeks after he was released at the end of Spring Training.
Haase wasted little time returning to action and was back in the lineup for Triple-A Sacramento shortly after rejoining the organization. His return provides the Giants with additional catching depth at the upper levels of the system.
Earlier in camp, Haase was in the mix for the backup catcher role behind starter Patrick Bailey. He competed alongside Rule 5 selection Daniel Susac and rising prospect Jesús Rodríguez for the spot.
Despite a productive spring at the plate, the Giants ultimately opted to keep Susac on the major-league roster while assigning Rodríguez to Triple-A. That decision led to Haase being granted his release.
During Cactus League play, Haase showed flashes of his offensive upside, hitting .286 with a pair of home runs across 32 plate appearances. However, swing-and-miss remained part of his profile as he struck out 14 times during that stretch.
Now back in the organization, Haase joins a Sacramento catching group that includes Rodríguez and Logan Porter. His presence adds a layer of experience that few others in the system can match.
Across parts of five major-league seasons, Haase has logged more than 1,200 plate appearances in nearly 400 games. He owns a career slash line of .228/.278/.396, with much of his value tied to his right-handed power.
While he has demonstrated the ability to drive the ball, his offensive approach has often come with higher strikeout totals.
Defensively, Haase has generally been viewed as more of an offense-first catcher, which has influenced how teams deploy him. With Bailey firmly entrenched as the Giants’ primary catcher at the big league level, and Susac at the backup spot, Haase is likely viewed as a depth signing.
His return gives the Giants a familiar option they can rely on if injuries arise or additional catching help is needed during the season.
