23-year-old left-handed prospect Matt Wilkinson is getting his chance with the San Francisco Giants.
The San Francisco Giants are calling up left-handed pitcher Matt Wilkinson, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on Monday.
Wilkinson, 23, was included in the trade that sent two-time Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians in May. After beginning the season in the Guardians’ minor-league system, Wilkinson is getting his chance.
Who is Wilkinson?
Wilkinson, also popularly referred to as "Tugboat," was selected by Cleveland with the 308th pick in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Central Arizona Junior College.
The 6-foot-1, 250-pound lefty is known for what he calls "The Invisi-ball," which he has used to his advantage since he was pitching for Canada in the Little League World Series more than a decade ago.
According to what Wilkinson told MLB.com reporter Matt Monogan, it is a pitch predicated on a low release with good extension. Because of the technique, Wilkinson can make a fastball in the low 90’s seem much quicker than it is.
After being assigned to the Guardians’ Prospects squad at the beginning of March, Wilkinson made his way to Double-A Akron by the end of the month. He appeared in six games for Akron, all of which were starts, and he went 1-2 with a 1.59 ERA through 28.1 innings of work in which he racked up 36 strikeouts.
After he was traded to San Francisco, Wilkinson was assigned to Double-A Richmond. There, he made three starts and went 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings pitched.
By June 2, Wilkinson was on his way to Triple-A Sacramento. He experienced a stint on the 7-day Injured List that kept him off the mound for nearly two weeks toward the end of June, but he made his return on June 30 in the form of a rehab assignment with the ACL Giants.
Wilkinson appeared in just one game for the ACL team, where he pitched three innings and struck out four batters. On July 5, Sacramento activated him from the IL.
Hitters have gotten to Wilkinson much more since he arrived in Triple-A. Through 10 starts with Sacramento this season, Wilkinson is 3-4 with a 5.15 ERA.
In 43.2 innings of work, he has allowed 25 earned runs and 17 walks while striking out 43 batters. However, the Giants like what he has to offer, so much so that they moved off Bailey to get him. Now, with San Francisco’s season in the gutter, Wilkinson gets his chance.
