San Francisco bolsters its pitching depth by snatching Duncan Davitt from Atlanta, ending Spencer Bivens’ turbulent tenure after a series of costly appearances fueled by bullpen inconsistencies.
The San Francisco Giants wasted no time announcing a new roster move after their 7-6 victory.
Right-handed pitcher Duncan Davitt has been claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves, and the Giants decided that he's going to report to Triple-A Sacramento.
In order to make room on the roster, fellow righty Spencer Bivens has been designated for assignment.
Bivens, 32, has been with the Giants since the 2024 season but his numbers this year have been abysmal, to say the least.
Sporting a 14.40 ERA in five innings, the Giants felt they had no choice to move on from him, even if his numbers weren't that horrific the two years prior.
Making sense of Giants decision to DFA Bivens
This team has had injury after injury in 2026, and Bivens simply hasn't been able to contribute when this team needs him to.
The Virginia native is on his second stint in the big leagues this year, and it's crazy to think he was nearly perfect in his two innings of work on July 6 and July 8.
Sure, he allowed two unearned runs on July 8, but that came in a game where the Giants lost 10-0.
Since his return on Aug. 26, Bivens has allowed eight earned runs in just three innings of work.
He recently needed 50 pitches to record six outs on Aug. 28, so it's clear the writing was on the wall.
In just five innings this year, Bivens has allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits. He's only allowed one home run, but he's averaging 25.4 pitches per inning, and that's simply not going to cut it on a team that's struggled far too much with their bullpen depth this season.
Time to see what Davitt can do
Davitt, 26, is an interesting name to bring in. He's bounced around quite a bit this year, and is extremely unproven at the big league level, but currently out of playoff contention, the Giants have absolutely nothing to lose.
The Iowa native made his big league debut with the Chicago White Sox this season where he posted a 4.50 ERA in two innings.
Davitt's MLB debut came on April 10, and he recorded three outs in 14 pitches despite allowing a walk.
Fast forward to his second appearance on August 2, the White Sox moved on from him after an inning where he allowed a solo home run.
Davitt's numbers are far better than Bivens in 2026, but it's worth noting he has a 6.29 ERA in the minors this year with a decent sample size of 73.0 innings.
