The San Francisco Giants trade infielder Nate Furman for lefty prospect Tony Neubeck to clear roster space.
The San Francisco Giants have begun to put in some extra work as they attempt to get their roster down to the 40-man limit.
Even after this trade with the Washington Nationals, the team is still at 49 players, so there are going to be a slew of moves announced in the next day or so.
Fresh off having Andrew Knizner clear waivers and be outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, the team now sent infielder Nate Furman to the Nationals for left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Neubeck appeared in just two games for Single-A Fredericksburg, so this is clearly a guy who is nowhere near ready to be put on the 40-man roster.
The Giants officially have nine players left to go after moving on from Furman, someone who hit just .125 in his first 32 at-bats at the big leagues this season.
Giants quickly moved on from Furman
Life comes at you fast, and that's exactly what happened to Furman. The 25-year-old made his big-league debut on Saturday, Aug. 1, and then would appear in 22 games for the team through Sept. 15.
He went just 4-for-32 in his time with the Giants, striking out 10 times and drawing five walks.
His .125/.243/.125 slash line simply wasn't going to cut it, and with an OPS of .368, this move felt like a no-brainer as the Giants try to manipulate the 40-man roster.
Getting a player like Neubeck in return allows this to be a simple player-for-player swap, and even if the southpaw never ends up pitching for the Giants, this was a move they needed to make with a crowded infield.
Furman was competing with Casey Schmitt, Marcelo Mayer, Jonah Cox and Christian Koss for playing time, and at this stage in his career, he's simply too far below them on the depth chart to make any sort of impact.
San Francisco knows this is one of many moves that will need to be made in preparation for a new 40-man roster, and Furman likely won't be the only one-and-done player they move on from after a horrific 2026 campaign.
Get to know Neubeck
There's always a chance a trade like this ends up paying off in the long run, but that's up to the 23-year-old to work his way up the ranks.
Neubeck stands 6-foot-2 and threw six scoreless innings at Single-A last season. The Giants are getting a guy who didn't play much a year ago. But there are reasons to be excited as he allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters in that sample size.
