The San Francisco Giants fell behind early and never recovered Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Francisco Giants were unable to recover from another slow start Tuesday night, falling 8-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks as their struggles against their National League West rivals continued.
Arizona struck first with a three-run first inning before adding three more runs in the third, putting the Giants in a six-run hole before the game reached the middle innings. The loss dropped San Francisco to 0-8 against the Diamondbacks this season, extending a frustrating trend in the season series.
The Giants' offense never found consistent momentum, collecting just four hits throughout the night. While they managed to avoid being shut out with a pair of solo home runs, the early deficit proved too much to erase.
Roupp Battles Command Issues
Right-hander Landon Roupp endured one of his toughest outings of the season, lasting just 2 2/3 innings.
Roupp surrendered six earned runs on five hits while issuing six walks, a combination that continually put Arizona in favorable scoring situations.
Although he struck out four batters, the inability to consistently locate his pitches prevented him from working deeper into the game and forced the Giants to lean on their bullpen early.
Arizona capitalized on nearly every opportunity, using patient at-bats and timely hitting to build a commanding lead before the Giants could settle into the contest.
Arraez Provides Bright Spot
Despite the loss, Luis Arraez turned in one of the Giants' few offensive highlights.
The veteran infielder recorded three of San Francisco's four hits, finishing a double shy of the cycle. He also launched a solo home run, continuing to provide quality contact even during an otherwise quiet night for the lineup.
Rafael Devers added the Giants' other run with a solo homer later in the game, but San Francisco was unable to string together enough baserunners to mount a serious comeback.
Looking Ahead
The Giants will look to avoid another series defeat on Wednesday when they send right-hander Trevor McDonald to the mound. Arizona is expected to counter with right-hander Zac Gallen as San Francisco searches for its first victory against the Diamondbacks this season.
The Giants will be aiming for a cleaner performance on both sides of the ball after another game in which early pitching struggles and limited offensive production proved costly.
