Giants bolster analytics and baseball operations with new Assistant GM and familiar championship-era advisors.

As the San Francisco Giants ventured deeper into Buster Posey’s leadership era, the organization unveiled a fresh wave of front-office changes aimed at bolstering both its analytical core and its network of seasoned baseball advisors. This week, the club confirmed that longtime analytics executive Paul Bien has been promoted to Assistant General Manager, while former Giants Curt Casali and Javier López are rejoining the franchise as Advisors to Baseball Operations.

These moves reflect an ongoing pattern under Posey, who has consistently surrounded himself with individuals he trusts and knows well. When he first assumed the role of overseeing baseball operations a year ago, Posey relied on familiar voices such as former general manager Bobby Evans and ex-agent Jeff Berry to guide the transition. As he approaches his second year, he is increasingly incorporating individuals who shared the field with him or played a significant role in the Giants’ championship period.

Bien’s promotion signifies the most substantial structural shift. Since joining the Giants in 2012, a season that coincided with the franchise’s second World Series title of the decade, Bien has gradually assumed greater responsibility as analytics became a central factor in roster construction and player evaluation. Over the years, he has overseen the growth of the Giants’ internal data systems, participated in player-acquisition discussions, and contributed to staff evaluations. Additionally, he has been involved in interviewing candidates during the club’s ongoing coaching-staff overhaul this winter.

López’s new advisory role brings back a figure deeply connected to the Giants’ most successful era. The left-hander spent seven seasons with the organization and was a key contributor to all three championship teams. In recent years, he has primarily been a broadcaster, but his presence at the General Manager Meetings in Las Vegas last month suggested that he was taking on responsibilities beyond television work. López will continue to be part of the Giants’ broadcast coverage, but he will now also be involved in baseball operations discussions, drawing on his years of postseason and bullpen experience.

Casali’s return adds another respected baseball mind to the mix. The veteran catcher, who backed up Posey during the 2021 season and appeared in parts of three years with the Giants, has earned a strong reputation for his preparation and leadership qualities. After spending the previous season working in the Reds’ front office, he now reenters the Giants’ organization in a role expected to involve player evaluation, catching development, and broader operational planning. Within the industry, Casali is seen as someone with the skills to eventually transition into managing or high-level leadership.

With the recent moves, it certainly suggests Posey’s strategy of combining data-driven analysis with the practical insights of individuals who understand the organization’s identity and competitive standards. This combination is what the Giants hope will steer them back toward sustained success.
