Bryce Eldridge matched a legendary 1977 milestone with his 10th home run with the San Francisco Giants.
The San Francisco Giants have gotten an incredible amount of production since Bryce Eldridge made his big-league debut.
That said, the rest of the team simply hasn't lived up to the hype. This time, it was Robbie Ray who managed to go only four innings, and then Adrian Houser allowed three runs in his relief appearance.
This Giants team now sits at 42-57 as manager Tony Vitello discussed the "difficult" loss with the media.
Eldridge, 21, blasted his 10th home run in the first inning off star Seattle Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert. In the end, the Giants fell, 6-3, in a game that saw the rookie make franchise history.
Eldridge makes history dating back to 1977
At such a young age, only one other player in franchise history has managed to hit double-digit homers in their 21-year-old season. Most Giants fans may not even recall Jack Clark, but he's the last man to do so back in 1977. Clark managed to hit 13 that year, a number that feels well within reach for Eldridge.
"I don’t know when the next one will come, but that one will go down in the statistics today,” Vitello said after the loss, according to MLB.com.
Vitello added, "It was impressive what he did in the first inning on that swing. Where he hit it, the location of the pitch, how hard he hit it, how loud it sounded. But he’s just kind of picking up where he left off.”
Eldridge wasted no time hitting the solo shot as it was the first pitch he saw, and it was Gilbert's fifth of the game. Officially, it's his second home run in his last three games. He already has four in the month of July, a month that sees him with a .905 OPS in 52 at-bats.
Vitello discusses the loss
"I think everybody’s mind is going to be on a difficult loss today,” the Giants manager said. “But it’s baseball. It’s an everyday thing. Right now it’s a bad day.
"We’ll get on the flight. Pouting on the flight ain’t going to change anything. You do what you do on the flight... play cards, take a nap, whatever... and then when we land, it’s go time against the Royals.”
Currently in fourth place in the National League West, the Giants would love to win more than one game in this six-game road stretch. If there was ever a time to stack wins, it's now, especially knowing that the Kansas City Royals are 20 games below .500.
