Mired in a dismal season, the San Francisco Giants are shopping veterans like Matt Chapman and Rafael Devers to clear payroll and jumpstart a rebuild centered around Bryce Eldridge.
In a world where the San Francisco Giants are 29-43, there's no reason not to blow things up.
San Francisco is currently 16.5 games back in the National League West Division, yet that's still not enough to put them in last place.
Sure, they're only fourth in the division, but fourth in a division like this isn't going to make fans feel any easier about the team's position. The Giants have been struggling, big time, and it may be time to make some major changes.
Whether or not Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey wants chaos at the deadline remains to be seen, but ESPN's Buster Olney has confirmed the team is open to offers on Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman.
Giants Need a Major Reset
Here in the Posey era, there's no need to wait for things to fix themselves. Devers and Adames have been rough, and that's putting it lightly. Chapman is solid, but he's 33 years old and this team has a clear path to focus on the next generation instead of holding onto massive contracts that are setting them back.
If the Giants can admit they took a big swing and failed, that's step one. Them even fielding offers on these three is a bit surprising given the state of the franchise. Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray remain on the table as well, so why not completely blow things up and head into 2027 with a fresh slate.
Build the Team Around Bryce Eldridge
As slowly as they've taken things with Eldridge, it's time to go all-in on the 21-year-old. The lefty is hitting .317 and already has five homers in just 104 at-bats this season. His OPS sits at .953, a number most of the veterans on this team would dream of having.
If San Francisco could maneuver some trades to bring in top prospects that are ready to play in the big leagues, this team could look entirely different.
There's a strong case to be made to keep a few star players to mentor the young guys and help get them to that next level, but in no world were the Giants going to trade Devers, Adames, Chapman, Arraez, and Ray all in the same season.
The time to make moves is now. Waiting until the offseason would likely only further tank the value of Devers or Adames. Those two are easy trade candidates that the Giants likely won't get a lot for, but moving on helps Posey and company immediately leave their mark on a struggling franchise that needs desperate help.
