The San Francisco Giants have appointed Gary Pettis as their third-base coach.
The San Francisco Giants have filled their vacant third base coach position, announcing the hiring of Gary Pettis on Tuesday. The move comes after the organization removed Hector Borg from his third-base coaching duties and reassigned him to a player development role.
Pettis arrives with one of the most extensive coaching résumés in baseball. The former major-league outfielder spent 11 seasons as a player and built a reputation as one of the game's premier defensive outfielders. A five-time Gold Glove Award winner, Pettis was also known throughout his playing career for his speed and baserunning ability.
Decades of Coaching Experience
Following his retirement as a player, Pettis transitioned into coaching and has spent more than two decades in major-league dugouts.
Over the course of his coaching career, he has held both first-base and third-base coaching assignments with several organizations, including the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Houston Astros.
Most recently, Pettis spent a decade on Houston's coaching staff, serving as the club's third-base coach during one of the most successful stretches in franchise history. During his tenure, the Astros captured two World Series championships and established themselves as one of baseball's perennial contenders.
His arrival gives the Giants an accomplished veteran voice on the coaching staff and provides additional support for first-year manager Tony Vitello as he continues navigating his inaugural season at the major league level.
Familiar Faces and Additional Responsibilities
Pettis also reunites with Giants infield coach Ron Washington. The two previously worked together while serving on the Rangers' coaching staff, bringing an established working relationship to San Francisco's dugout.
While his primary responsibility will be handling third-base coaching duties, Pettis' expertise extends beyond directing runners during games.
His background as an elite defender and accomplished baserunner could make him a valuable resource for the Giants' younger players, particularly those developing their instincts on the bases and in the outfield.
By adding Pettis, the Giants are bringing in a respected baseball lifer whose experience spans multiple organizations, championship clubs, and nearly three decades of coaching at the highest level.
