Seeking relief for a struggling bullpen, the San Francisco Giants added veteran right-hander Joel Kuhnel to the active roster.

In a move that shouldn't come as much of a surprise, the San Francisco Giants have wasted no time promoting right-handed pitcher Joel Kuhnel.

Kuhnel, 31, was recently claimed off waivers. He is set to play for his third team this season, having already made 25 appearances with the Athletics and 10 with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kuhnel is a true reliever as he's came out of the bullpen in all 117 of his appearances dating back to 2019.

Officially, this will be the sixth team Kuhnel has played for in his sixth year in the majors.

The Giants announced that he was reporting to the Major League club on Saturday, Sept. 5, with the corresponding move seeing fellow righty Ryan Walker be optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Giants have nothing to lose by giving Kuhnel a shot

So far this season, Kuhnel has posted an even 0.0 WAR. He was a 0.4 WAR player with the A's, but that quickly faded as he became a -0.4 WAR player during his time with the Brewers.

Kuhnel hasn't pitched in the majors since Thursday, July 2. The Brewers would place him on the 15-day Injured List due to a shoulder injury, but the timing of him rejoining the club simply didn't work out as they traded for a pair of relievers who would ultimately take Kuhnel's spot.

Now, Kuhnel joins a Giants bullpen that hasn't been great, to say the least. San Francisco's pitching staff has given up 10+ runs in four of their last 10 games which highlights just how much of a forgettable season this has truly been.

Kuhnel could appear in a game as soon as Sept. 5 which will be just over two months since his last one inning appearance where he gave up three hits and one earned run in 21 pitches.

The North Carolina native sports a 4.84 ERA this season which is below his career 5.58 ERA. He had an extremely high 1.97 WHIP with the Brewers, but again, that came with a 10-game sample size so it'll be interesting to see if the Giants can get him back on track.

Walker was a -1.0 WAR player

Seeing Walker go back down to Triple-A was expected as he's carrying a career high 7.16 ERA this season.

The 30-year-old has already given up an earned run in each of his September appearances, and while his first three appearances in late August were looking promising, he's given up four earned runs in his last 2.2 innings which includes a home run given up along with three walks to just one strikeout.
