The Giants allocated the vast majority of their international bonus pool, one of the lowest in the league at just over $5.4 million, to land the 17-year-old Hernandez, whose combination of hit, power, and overall athleticism sets him apart from his peers.
Hernandez’s profile has drawn considerable attention on scouting boards. He stands out for advanced bat skills and a mature offensive approach, attributes that helped him excel in the Venezuelan Major League, where he produced strong numbers against older, more experienced competition as a mid-teenager.
That experience, paired with his bat-to-ball ability and advanced feel for hitting, has made him one of the most talked-about international players in recent years.
Defensively, Hernandez has displayed fluid footwork and solid instincts at shortstop, capable of making all the necessary plays up the middle.
Scouts note that while his running and arm strength may be viewed as average, his overall athletic profile and baseball IQ give him a legitimate chance to stick at a premium position.
This move marks the second straight season the Giants have signed one of Latin America’s highest-rated prospects, following last year’s addition of shortstop Josuar Gonzalez in the 2025 class, a signing that has already begun paying dividends within the organization’s minor-league ranks.
San Francisco’s focus on top amateur talent reflects a broader strategy to strengthen its farm system through international avenues, aiming to develop future impact players who can contribute at the Major League level.
