The San Francsico Giants did not make a splash trade or big free agent signing during the Winter Meetings but talks of the organization being in the mix for several names are starting to heat up.
Recently, Katie Woo of The Athletic reported talks of the Giants being linked to All-Star second basemen Brendan Donovan and Ketel Marte. Now, Bleacher Report has tied San Francisco to Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams.
“Possibly while the Royals and Nationals were discussing Abrams' availability, there was talk at last week's winter meetings that the Giants could be willing to move top prospect Bryce Eldridge,” it wrote. “If San Francisco is willing to have that conversation, it must be reasonably comfortable with Rafael Devers as the long-term plan at first base, after he made 28 starts there this past fall. And if that's the case, what an infield they could put together with Devers at first, Abrams at second, Willy Adames at shortstop and Matt Chapman at third base.”
“Granted, what the Giants actually need is starting pitching, and they're probably not parting with Eldridge unless it's to get another ace-caliber arm into the rotation alongside Robbie Ray and Logan Webb. Frankly, if it's a trade with the Nationals, a straight up swap of Eldridge for LHP MacKenzie Gore seems far more likely than for Abrams.”
Webb is the Giants’ pillar in the rotation. In 2025, he led the team in starts (34), innings pitched (207) and had the best ERA among the starters 3.22. However, the onus cannot fall squarely on his shoulders. “Then again, it wouldn't be shocking if the Giants were feeling a bit of desperation to lock in a reasonably sure thing at second base for a few years. They've been juggling options at that spot in the lineup since Joe Panik had that breakout in the mid-2010s.”
The Giants are in a tough spot because they are also handicapped by a below average offense. Last season, San Francisco ranked 25th in batting average (.235), 26th in hits (1,261), 17th in RBIs (672) and 22nd in OPS (.697).
By adding Abrams, the Giants get a career. 249 hitter that hit 19 home runs last season and had 32 stolen bases. Devers and Adames combined for 50 home runs in 2025, and adding Abrams gives San Francisco another legitimate infield option and adds more firepower to a lineup that desperately needs it to become more potent.
