The San Francisco Giants entered Saturday's game looking to build on one of their most impressive victories of the season after routing the Chicago Cubs 18-3 on Friday.

Instead, the Giants came up short in extra innings, falling 3-2 to the Cubs.

The Giants turned to Landen Roupp, who delivered one of his better outings in recent weeks.

After struggling in his previous start, when he surrendered eight runs against the Milwaukee Brewers, Roupp looked much sharper against Chicago. He effectively worked through the Cubs lineup and kept the game scoreless through five innings.

His performance also continued a recent trend of strong starting pitching for San Francisco. Roupp finished with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking three and striking out five. He threw 98 pitches, 61 of them for strikes.

Offensively, the Giants struggled to generate much momentum. After scoring 30 runs over their previous two games, San Francisco managed just one hit through the first five innings.

The quiet offensive performance was somewhat surprising, although the Giants were facing Ben Brown, who has been one of Chicago's most effective pitchers this season. Entering the game, Brown carried a 2-2 record and a 1.92 ERA.

San Francisco finally broke through in the sixth inning when Rafael Devers launched a solo home run to right-center field off Cubs reliever Caleb Thielbar.

The Cubs answered in the bottom half of the inning when Pete Crow-Armstrong tied the game with a solo homer.

Following Roupp's outing, Caleb Killian took over and delivered a strong scoreless appearance out of the bullpen. Erik Miller also tossed a scoreless outing, with his biggest moment coming in the seventh inning when he struck out Alex Bregman with the bases loaded to escape the threat.

The game remained tied until the ninth inning, when Matt Chapman lifted a sacrifice fly that gave the Giants a 2-1 lead.

Keaton Winn handled both the eighth and ninth innings and looked effective throughout most of his outing. However, Crow-Armstrong struck again in the ninth, launching a game-tying home run for his second homer of the afternoon.

The game eventually moved into extra innings, where the Cubs walked it off in the 10th. Dansby Swanson scored the winning run on a single to right field that was followed by a fielding error from Victor Bericoto.

The Giants will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday. Trevor McDonald is scheduled to start for San Francisco after posting a 2-3 record with a 4.50 ERA this season. He will face Jamison Taillon, who enters the matchup with a 2-5 record and a 5.13 ERA.
