Jung Hoo Lee’s season-ending injury marks a grim milestone for the San Francisco Giants, leaving the roster unrecognizable after a relentless wave of trades, releases, and injuries.
The San Francisco Giants completed several transactions Monday, but placing Jung Hoo Lee on the 10-day Injured List carried particular significance.
Lee suffered a groin contusion that ended his season. He will miss the final six games against the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Seemingly endless changes
The move initially appears to be another entry on an extensive list of Giants injuries. However, Susan Slusser from the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Lee was the last active member of San Francisco’s Opening Day lineup.
None of the Giants who started against the New York Yankees on Mar. 25 remain active or with the organization.
San Francisco opened the season with Patrick Bailey and Daniel Susac at catcher. Bailey was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in May, while Susac is on the Injured List.
Rafael Devers started at first base but is finished for the season because of a core muscle injury. Shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman are also on the Injured List. The Giants traded starting second baseman Luis Arraez to the Philadelphia Phillies at the deadline.
Their five Opening Day outfielders were Heliot Ramos, Harrison Bader, Lee, Jerar Encarnacion and Jared Oliva.
Ramos was traded to the Yankees. Bader and Lee are on the Injured List. San Francisco released Encarnacion, who joined the Yokohama DeNA BayStars from Nippon Professional Baseball. Oliva was released in June and is in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
The Giants carried utility players Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss. Schmitt is injured, while Koss remains active with San Francisco.
Opening Day starter Logan Webb is on the Injured List. Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle were traded, while Adrian Houser is injured. Landen Roupp remains active.
San Francisco’s Opening Day bullpen included Ryan Walker, Erik Miller, José Buttó, Ryan Borucki, Matt Gage, JT Brubaker, Caleb Kilian and Keaton Winn.
The Giants traded Kilian and Miller. Brubaker, Buttó, Winn and Gage are on the Injured List. Walker is back with Triple-A Sacramento. Borucki was released and joined the Cleveland organization.
That extraordinary turnover explains why San Francisco’s season became such a mess and why so few players reached the finale.
Lee’s value
Lee had a solid season, hitting .276 with 31 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 57 RBIs, 12 stolen bases and a .724 OPS in 143 games.
Lee’s season-ending injury removes a player whose contact ability and speed can give an offense different ways to create pressure. He can challenge defenders by putting the ball in play and using his quickness rather than depending entirely on power.
His range and instincts also provide value in the outfield. Playing the position well requires anticipation, efficient routes and confidence when covering significant ground.
Lee must now focus on recovering fully from the groin injury. His absence completes the disappearance of San Francisco’s original lineup and makes him the final symbol of a roster transformed by injuries, trades and releases.
