Marcelo Mayer recorded a hit and an RBI as the San Francisco Giants shortstop continued his rehab assignment.
Marcelo Mayer is continuing to make progress toward his return to the Major Leagues, giving the San Francisco Giants another encouraging update on one of their newest additions.
Mayer continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and two strikeouts. It was another opportunity for the young infielder to get comfortable at the plate and work his way back into game shape.
The Giants acquired Mayer from the Boston Red Sox at the Trade Deadline in a deal that sent reliever Erik Miller to Boston. The move brought one of baseball’s highly regarded young infielders into the organization as San Francisco looks toward both the present and future.
Mayer has been sidelined since June 26 because of a bone stress reaction in his left ulna. The injury kept him out for several weeks, but he began his rehab assignment with Sacramento on Aug. 13.
Since then, Mayer has been able to return to competitive action while working toward a potential Major League return.
The 23-year-old could be nearing the end of his rehab assignment, with a return to the Giants potentially coming during the club’s current road trip through Cleveland and Boston. San Francisco has yet to officially announce when Mayer will be activated, but his continued participation in games is an important step in that process.
Mayer originally joined the professional ranks after Boston selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the organization’s top prospects and eventually reached the Major Leagues.
Before his injury, Mayer had appeared in 114 games at the Major League level. He has recorded seven home runs during that time while continuing to adjust to the challenges of playing regularly against Major League pitching.
Now, his focus is on getting back to full strength and showing that he is ready for another opportunity in the big leagues.
For the Giants, Mayer’s potential return would provide another intriguing young player for the club to evaluate during the final weeks of the season. His arrival could also give San Francisco a chance to see how he fits into its plans moving forward.
There is still work to be done before Mayer officially returns to the Giants, but his latest rehab appearance represents another positive step. If he continues progressing without setbacks, his Major League debut with San Francisco may not be far away.
