As the San Francisco Giants weigh a massive roster fire sale, ace Logan Webb and a core of rising prospects remain the foundation for an aggressive Bay Area rebuild.
It's important for every team to take a step back and look at their untouchables, but it's especially important for the San Francisco Giants, a team who may be hosting a fire sale.
With longtime ESPN MLB reporter Buster Olney mentioning names such as Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman on the trade block, one can only imagine how this team could look in the second half of the year.
The Giants know they have a young stud in Bryce Eldridge, so now they need to figure out how to offload these major contracts for veterans who simply aren't playing to the standard this team needs.
In the process, MLB.com senior national reporter Mark Feinsand has mentioned a few players in particular the Giants decided they won't be moving at the deadline.
Logan Webb Isn't Going Anywhere
Webb, 29, is set to be with the Giants through 2028. His five-year, $90 million deal looks like a steal with the way pitchers contracts have been constructed in the past few years.
He hasn't been perfect, but his ERA has been under 3.47 since 2021 and he's once again trending in the right direction. Sure, the team would love to see him improve his 4-4 record, but a pitchers win/loss record doesn't mean everything.
Webb has a 1.3 WAR this year, which is down tremendously from his past few seasons, but there's still plenty of time for that to get back up to the 3.7+ it's been each of the last five seasons.
Additionally, his 1.15 WHIP is hovering around the top 30 in the league, as is his ERA. These numbers are passable, by a wide margin, especially considering what they're dealing with from Devers and Adames at the plate.
Young Players are Untouchables
Feinsand didn't mention any of the team's "young players" in particular, but that all starts with Eldridge.
Building the team around him isn't out of the ordinary, especially if they're able to work out two or three huge deals at the deadline. No doubt, giving up on the likes of Devers or Adames would bring in some MLB-ready prospects that the Giants won't have to waste any time developing.
Other than Eldridge, 27-year-old Jung Hoo Lee has been phenomenal. He doesn't seem to be in danger of going anywhere, nor does fellow 27-year-old Casey Schmitt.
Those aren't exactly the youngest players in the world, but the Giants also have 26-year-old Heliot Ramos and 25-year-old Drew Gilbert, along with 25-year-old Daniel Susac, who are giving this team a young foundation to build around.
