The San Francisco Giants may soon face difficult choices involving both their pitching staff and everyday lineup.

After spending much of the season navigating injuries across the roster, the San Francisco Giants are finally getting closer to welcoming back several contributors.

Left-handed reliever Matt Gage and right-hander Tyler Mahle have both begun the next phase of their recoveries, while outfielder Heliot Ramos continues making progress toward game action.

Their returns won't solve all of San Francisco's problems, but they could force the club to make several important roster decisions in the coming weeks.

For a team searching for answers after falling further below .500, those decisions may carry significant weight.

Rotation Battle May Be Brewing

The most intriguing question centers on the starting rotation.

Mahle is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, putting him on a path toward returning from a hamstring injury.

While his first season with the Giants has not gone according to plan, the veteran still offers a lengthy Major League track record and could receive another opportunity to establish himself in the rotation.

His impending return places additional pressure on rookie Trevor McDonald, who has filled the vacancy since Mahle landed on the Injured List. McDonald showed promise early but has struggled to find consistency, including another difficult outing against the Chicago Cubs.

The Giants must now decide whether continued development at the major-league level is best for McDonald or if Mahle's experience gives the club a better chance to stabilize the rotation.

Bullpen Could Face a Crunch

Gage's return may create another roster challenge.

The veteran left-hander opened a rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose and could be back in San Francisco sooner rather than later.

However, the Giants already have multiple left-handed relievers on the active roster, making it unlikely the club will carry an additional southpaw without making a corresponding move.

That could leave Reiver Sanmartin in a vulnerable position. The left-hander still has minor-league options available, giving the Giants flexibility if they need to clear room once Gage is activated.

As the bullpen continues to evolve throughout the season, roster flexibility could become a deciding factor.

Ramos' Return Could Reshape the Outfield

The Giants are also encouraged by the progress of Ramos, who has resumed baseball activities and may begin a rehab assignment in the near future.

His eventual return presents an interesting challenge for a lineup that has undergone significant changes during his absence.

Casey Schmitt has adapted well to left field, while rookie Bryce Eldridge has provided enough offense to strengthen his hold on the designated hitter role. Those developments could leave the Giants exploring different outfield alignments once Ramos is healthy.

One possibility would involve moving Ramos to right field and shifting Jung Hoo Lee back to center, though the organization will likely evaluate multiple configurations before making a final decision.

Decisions Ahead for San Francisco

Getting healthy is rarely a bad problem to have, but the Giants will soon be forced to determine which players give them the best chance to compete.

With Mahle, Gage, and Ramos all trending in the right direction, the next phase of San Francisco's season may be defined not only by who returns, but by the roster moves that follow.
