The San Francisco Giants are going into the All-Star break in the winning column, getting a Sunday win over the Colorado Rockies.
The San Francisco Giants are heading into the All-Star break on a winning note after defeating the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, 3-1 at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
The Giants took the series after winning three of the four games. How did they capture the finale?
A wild start
The game began in bizarre fashion from the moment Rockies right-fielder Jake McCarthy stepped up to the plate as the leadoff batter.
With an 0-1 count, McCarthy launched a deep hit to the warning track in right field and began sprinting the base paths. After Giants right fielder Jung Hoo Lee mishandled the ball initially, McCarthy was already on his way to third.
Lee got the ball to Luis Arraez, but McCarthy was being waved to home plate. By the time the ball reached home, McCarthy was sliding in to complete the inside-the-park home run and give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
The Giants got out of the inning, but they did not immediately respond. San Francisco went scoreless in the first, second, and third innings before finally getting on the board.
After Rafael Devers lined out and Lee grounded out to open the fourth, Bryce Eldridge drew a two-out walk before Willy Adames singled. With runners on the corners, Drew Gilbert hit an RBI single to left field that scored Eldridge and tied the game.
The winning blow
During the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, neither team could add to the scoreboard.
Through the three innings, offense was so hard to come by that both the Giants and Rockies only combined for two hits. Then, in the eighth inning, San Francisco delivered the knockout punch.
The frame began with a leadoff walk by Devers before Eldridge hit a one-out single to advance the former to third base. Giants manager Tony Vitello chose to replace Eldridge with pinch-runner Grant McCray, and it forced Colorado into a critical error.
McCray took off in an attempt to steal second base, and Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman committed a throwing error that brought Devers home and allowed McCray to advance to third base. WIth a 2-1 lead, Adames added some extra insurance with an RBI single to left field.
Left-hander Erik Miller closed the game for the Giants and, after allowing a leadoff single, Miller and the Giants recorded three-straight outs to win the game. After the All-Star break, San Francisco will visit the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals to begin the second half of the season.
