Right elbow neuritis sidelines Keaton Winn, forcing the San Francisco Giants to immediately recall Reiver Sanmartin.
The San Francisco Giants weren't without Reiver Sanmartin for long as the 30-year-old has once again been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Seeing as he last pitched on Tuesday, Aug. 18, it's not like he was demoted for long.
Now, he's once again become a necessary part of this Giants rotation, knowing they lost right-handed pitcher Keaton Winn to the 15-day Injured List.
The Giants announced that Winn was being placed on the IL (retroactive to August 19) due to right elbow neuritis.
Winn last pitched on Sunday, Aug. 16, in an appearance that saw him give up a pair of earned runs on two hits in just 0.2 innings.
Winn heads to the IL
The Iowa native is in the midst of his fourth year in the big leagues, all of which have been in San Francisco. Winn, 28, is 2-3 this season and has appeared in 44 games, which is a career high, by far.
To put things into perspective, he's only made 72 appearances in his major league career. From 2023-25 combined, Winn made 17 starts in 28 appearances, but all 44 times he's pitched this season have come out of the bullpen.
While he's appeared in far more games than he ever has before, his 43 innings of work are still behind the 55.1 he threw in 2024. Two years ago, Winn was just 3-8 with a brutal 7.16 ERA and -1.1 WAR. Here in 2026, his ERA sits at a career-low 3.35 with a career-high 0.5 WAR.
This season is already a lost cause for the Giants, but it's not like they ever want to lose anyone to the IL. As for Winn, he was trending in the wrong direction, having allowed a trio of runs in his last 2.1 innings, including taking a loss and earning a blown save on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Prior to his last two outings, Winn had made seven straight scoreless appearances, though four of those saw him record just two outs.
Welcome back, Sanmartin
On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Giants optioned Sanmartin to Triple-A Sacramento as part of a busy day with five roster moves.
Less than 24 hours later, he's back with the Giants.
Sanmartin's 7.45 ERA leaves a lot to be desired, but he's 1-0 through his 9.2 innings of work in 10 appearances.
The Colombian native is coming off a scoreless two-inning outing and has allowed just one earned run in his last five appearances.
