San Francisco Giants prospect Argenis Cayama delivered five hitless innings as San Jose defeated Lake Elsinore to force a decisive Game 3.
Argenis Cayama waited until the biggest stage of his 2026 season to deliver one of his most impressive performances.
The San Francisco Giants’ No. 17 prospect played a central role in San Jose’s 9-1 victory over Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, throwing five hitless innings to help the Giants complete a combined no-hitter in Game 2 of the California League Finals at Excite Ballpark.
The victory kept San Jose’s championship hopes alive after Lake Elsinore dominated the series opener. The Storm won Sunday’s Game 1 by a 12-1 score, leaving the Giants with little margin for error entering Tuesday’s contest.
Cayama gave them exactly what they needed.
The 20-year-old right-hander struck out seven across his five innings, with the only run against him coming as an unearned run in the third inning. Lake Elsinore scored on a double steal with two outs, but Cayama otherwise kept the Storm from producing a hit.
Efficiency was another important part of the outing. Cayama needed only 68 pitches to complete his five innings and threw 41 of them for strikes.
San Jose then turned to Ian Korn and Eric Nachtsheim to finish the job. The pair combined for four additional hitless innings, with four strikeouts, securing the third no-hitter in San Jose franchise history. It was also the first no-hitter ever completed at Excite Ballpark.
While the team accomplishment will be remembered, Cayama’s performance also provided another encouraging piece of evidence in his development.
The Venezuela native entered 2026 coming off a breakout season in 2025, and he continued to attract attention throughout the year. He earned California League Pitcher of the Week honors twice, demonstrating an ability to put together dominant stretches despite missing nearly two months because of back spasms.
After returning, Cayama finished August with a 3.24 ERA over four starts. The results offered another indication that his development remained on track following the lengthy absence.
His full-season numbers were less eye-catching as Cayama finished with a 4.76 ERA over 19 appearances, including 18 starts. However, his strikeout-to-walk numbers provide additional context. He recorded 78 strikeouts against only 18 walks in 64.1 innings, giving him a 4.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
That combination of strikeout ability and control has remained an important part of Cayama’s prospect profile.
Tuesday was not the first time he showed that potential. He previously held Stockton hitless over five innings while striking out five on May 21. More recently, Cayama carried that effectiveness into the postseason.
Across his two postseason appearances, he allowed only one run and struck out 12 over 10 innings.
The timing of those performances matters. San Jose entered the postseason attempting to defend its California League championship, and Cayama has now helped keep that pursuit alive.
Josuar Gonzalez, the Giants’ No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 16 overall prospect, also contributed to Tuesday’s victory with two RBIs as San Jose’s offense broke the game open with nine runs.
Now, everything comes down to one game.
San Jose and Lake Elsinore will meet Wednesday night in a winner-take-all Game 3, with the California League championship on the line.
