Crawford returned to competition Friday in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League and wasted little time making an impact. The 25-year-old homered in San Francisco's 7-2 victory, highlighting a successful first step in what the organization hopes will be a healthy comeback.
In addition to the home run, Crawford drew a walk and recorded a strikeout, showing flashes of the offensive potential that once made him one of college baseball's most intriguing two-way players.
A Career Defined by Talent and Setbacks
The Giants selected Crawford with the 30th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of Connecticut, betting on a rare combination of size, athleticism, and power.
At UConn, Crawford excelled both as a hitter and a pitcher. His offensive abilities were on full display during his sophomore season when he emerged as one of the Big East's top power threats.
However, most scouts projected his long-term future on the mound, where his premium velocity and imposing 6-foot-4 frame gave him the profile of a potential frontline starter.
Even after Tommy John surgery limited his junior season, San Francisco believed the upside was worth the risk and made him a first-round selection.
That gamble has been tested by a series of health challenges. While Crawford was dominant in limited appearances throughout the Giants' farm system, injuries repeatedly interrupted his development.
Illnesses and muscle strains slowed his progress before shoulder problems ultimately forced him to undergo surgeries that kept him off the field for nearly two full seasons.
A New Chapter Begins
Before the injuries, Crawford had advanced as high as Triple-A as a pitcher and appeared to be moving closer to the major leagues. For now, however, his focus remains at the plate.
The Giants are easing Crawford back into competition as he continues recovering from shoulder procedures that have prevented him from returning to the mound. While his future role remains uncertain, Friday's home run served as a reminder that his power remains an intriguing part of his skill set.
