The San Francisco Giants recently placed Casey Schmitt on the Injured List and would love to have Harrison Bader back sooner rather than later.
As expected, the San Francisco Giants had no choice but to place Casey Schmitt on the Injured List.
As of Tuesday, July 28, he was officially placed on the 10-day Injured List, though there's fear that he'll be out much, much longer than that.
In his place, fellow infielder Osleivis Basabe has been selected from Triple-A Sacramento.
Elsewhere, the team learned a shocking new development on outfielder Harrison Bader. The 32-year-old hasn't appeared in a game since Friday, May 29, and he remains on the 10-day IL with a recently revealed accident that has set him back further.
Bader suffers another injury
According to NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic, Bader "went to see a specialist for his plantar fasciitis, but the Giants announced that he had a scooter accident 'on Saturday night/early Sunday morning' and further injured that left foot. He will now get an MRI for the new injury."
A scooter accident is the latest thing to be added to an extensive list of injuries the Giants have had to endure this season.
If it's not injuries, then it's struggling veterans who leave the team no choice but to be sellers at the deadline. Bader himself wasn't having the best year, hitting just .170, but he did record five homers in his first 106 at-bats.
Regardless, Schmitt has one of the team's biggest bright spots, especially in the youth department, but Pavlovic is picturing the worst-case scenario.
Schmitt could be done for the year
At this point, the Giants are already seemingly waving the white flag; it's just a matter of how much of a fire sale they have in the next week. Now that Schmitt is not only on the IL, but potentially done for the year, it can officially be said that this season is a lost cause.
"Giants have not given a timetable, but this is almost certainly season-ending," Pavlovic added. "Old friend Mike Tauchman had the same injury in the spring and missed about three months. A bummer for a guy who broke through this year, but he seems to have avoided an injury that would impact 2027."
Schmitt, 27, was quickly becoming a cornerstone of this franchise alongside Bryce Eldridge. The fourth-year Giants player already appeared in a career-high 98 games this season, and his numbers were better than each of his previous three seasons, by far.
The California native had a hit in his lone at-bat last night, but there doesn't seem to be a world where the team is going to be rushing to get his production back here in 2026. If anything, it just proved that they have an extremely talented player on their roster, one they can hopefully build around in 2027 and beyond.
