The San Francisco Giants' organizational depth took a hit this week after the club received injury updates on two players currently on optional assignment.

According to reports, infielder Christian Koss sustained a fractured left wrist, while outfielder Grant McCray suffered a fractured hamate bone in his left hand.

McCray is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday, while Koss is expected to be reevaluated in approximately two weeks as the organization determines the next steps in his recovery.

Both players occupy spots on San Francisco’s 40-man roster and were viewed as potential depth options should injuries or roster needs arise at the major-league level. Their absence leaves the Giants with fewer healthy position-player options in the upper levels of the system.

The timing of Koss’ injury also sheds light on a recent roster move. Earlier this week, San Francisco selected infielder Buddy Kennedy’s contract to provide additional infield depth off the bench. With Koss unavailable, the Giants needed another experienced option capable of filling a reserve role.

McCray opened the season at Triple-A Sacramento after being optioned during spring training. The athletic outfielder had posted a .237 batting average with a .360 on-base percentage and a .370 slugging percentage through 211 plate appearances. He added four home runs while continuing to work on his offensive consistency.

The 24-year-old has already gained major-league experience over the last two seasons, appearing in 59 games with San Francisco between 2024 and 2025. While his speed and defensive ability have been valuable assets, he struggled offensively during those opportunities, batting .185.

Koss, meanwhile, spent much of the early portion of the season in a limited role with the Giants before being optioned to Triple-A in mid-May. The infielder appeared in just 10 games and accumulated 15 plate appearances before returning to Sacramento in search of more regular playing time.

Unfortunately for Koss, the injury occurred shortly after his return to Triple-A, cutting short an opportunity to build momentum. The 2025 rookie appeared in 76 games for San Francisco last season and posted a .264 batting average while demonstrating defensive versatility across the infield.

Should the Giants require additional roster flexibility later in the season, either Koss or McCray could eventually be transferred to the 60-day Injured List to open a spot on the club’s 40-man roster. For now, the organization will await further medical evaluations while both players begin their respective recovery processes.
