Shaking off a historic collapse, Landen Roupp’s start and a four-run eighth inning powered the San Francisco Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Coming off what could be considered their worst loss in franchise history, the San Francisco Giants took care of business against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series opener.
Landen Roupp picked up his first win since July 17 as the Giants defeated their division rival, 6-1.
This is a D-backs team that's scratching and clawing their way to a Wild Card spot, so it's clear the Giants could play spoiler down the stretch as every game matters with roughly a month to go in the regular season.
San Francisco has now won three of their last four games as they improved to 55-79 on the year.
Pitching staff delivers a six-hit gem
Coming into this game, Roupp had lost five in a row. One of those losses wasn't really his fault as he allowed just one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. But he allowed three or more in the other four, and it's not like this is a Giants offense that has given its pitching staff a ton of run support this season.
Now 8-13 on the year, Roupp's five-inning, four-hit gem saw him allow the D-backs' lone run of the game, which was Gabriel Moreno's 66th RBI of the year.
Once Roupp was pulled after the fifth inning, a trio of Giants pitchers combined to allow just two hits, and both of those came from Ryan Walker, who pitched the ninth inning.
Both Trent Harris and Carson Seymour recorded holds, but Walker's appearance wasn't a save situation. Obviously, the Giants learned that no lead is safe, no matter how late in the game it is as they were coming off a ninth inning against the Cincinnati Reds that saw them blow a 9-3 lead.
Drew Gilbert's leadoff home run set the tone
It may have been the only home run in this game, but leadoff hitter Drew Gilbert won a seven-pitch battle that saw him crush an 83 mph sweeper to right-center.
His 407-foot homer gave the Giants an early lead, but the D-backs responded with a run in the fourth inning.
Thankfully, the Giants took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, and added four huge insurance runs in the eighth inning.
San Francisco outhit Arizona 7-6 in a game that saw Bryce Eldridge, Jonah Cox, Turner Hill, and Shay Whitcomb record back-to-back-to-back-to-back RBIs in the eighth.
For what it's worth, it was another two-hit night for Rafael Devers, though the veteran failed to homer in his fourth consecutive game.
