Daniel Susac is back from the Injured List, prompting the San Francisco Giants to designate veteran catcher Eric Haase for assignment.
The San Francisco Giants welcomed back catcher Daniel Susac on Friday, reinstating the rookie from the 10-day Injured List after he missed time with an injury. To clear a roster spot, the club designated veteran catcher Eric Haase for assignment.
The move reduces San Francisco's 40-man roster to 38 players while restoring one of the organization's young backstops to the active roster.
Youth movement behind the plate
Susac's return further reinforces the Giants' commitment to developing their young catching corps.
Alongside Drew Cavanaugh and Jesús Rodríguez, San Francisco will now carry three catchers with limited major-league experience, giving the organization an extended opportunity to evaluate its long-term options at the position.
Haase had served as valuable depth throughout much of the season after joining the roster when Susac was initially sidelined in April. He primarily worked as Patrick Bailey's backup before the veteran starter was traded, allowing Haase to take on a larger role during stretches of the season.
When Susac returned from his first stint on the Injured List, the catching picture briefly stabilized. However, another injury to Susac in late June opened the door for Cavanaugh's promotion, and Rodríguez was added to the major-league roster shortly afterward.
With Susac healthy once again, there was no longer room for the veteran on the active roster.
Haase's tenure comes to an end
The 33-year-old appeared in 29 games for San Francisco this season, hitting .162 with four home runs while posting a .235 on-base percentage and .365 slugging percentage across 84 plate appearances.
Although Haase continued to show occasional power, swing-and-miss remained a significant part of his offensive profile, limiting his overall production.
Over parts of nine major-league seasons, Haase has established himself as a reliable depth catcher capable of providing home run power, but offensive inconsistency has prevented him from securing a permanent everyday role.
Defensively, he has long been recognized for a strong throwing arm behind the plate.
What's next
The Giants will now expose Haase to waivers in the coming days. If he clears, he could remain with the organization in a non-roster capacity, though another club seeking experienced catching depth could also claim him.
For San Francisco, the transaction signals a continued emphasis on evaluating its younger talent as the season progresses, with Susac's return providing another opportunity for one of the organization's top catching prospects to establish himself at the major-league level.
