Heliot Ramos is back from the Injured List as the San Francisco Giants made room on the roster by designating Buddy Kennedy for assignment.
The San Francisco Giants welcomed back one of their regular outfielders on Sunday, activating Heliot Ramos from the Injured List after more than a month on the sidelines.
Ramos had been unavailable since May 16 because of a right quadriceps strain. Before rejoining the major-league roster, he completed an 11-day rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, where he showed few signs of lingering effects from the injury.
In nine rehab games, Ramos consistently produced at the plate, collecting hits at a high rate while displaying the offensive form the Giants hoped to see before clearing him for activation.
His return provides San Francisco with another experienced bat as the club continues navigating the second half of the season.
Defensive Alignment Could Shift
Manager Tony Vitello indicated the Giants may also adjust their defensive alignment now that Ramos is healthy.
Rather than returning exclusively to left field, Ramos is expected to see time in right field. That arrangement would allow Casey Schmitt to remain in left while Jung Hoo Lee shifts back to his natural position in center field.
The potential realignment represents a strategic move designed to maximize the club's overall offensive production, even if it comes with some defensive compromises.
Ramos has spent virtually all of his recent major-league time in left field, making the transition to right an adjustment worth monitoring over the coming weeks.
Kennedy Designated for Assignment
To create room on the active roster, the Giants designated infielder Buddy Kennedy for assignment. The transaction also opens a spot on San Francisco's 40-man roster while the organization determines Kennedy's next step.
Ramos entered the season as an important part of the Giants' lineup after establishing himself over the past two years. He posted above-average offensive production during his breakout 2024 campaign and has continued to provide steady contributions this season.
Before suffering the quad injury, the 25-year-old appeared in 176 plate appearances, batting .267 with a .307 on-base percentage and a .424 slugging percentage.
