San Francisco Giants rookie Matt Wilkinson put in perhaps his best start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
When the San Francisco Giants acquired Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson and the 29th pick in the 2026 MLB Draft from the Cleveland Guardians earlier this season, it was an interesting trade for both teams.
Not only because Wilkinson had been a productive arm in the Guardians' farm system, but also because the Giants would be parting ways with their platinum-glove catcher, Patrick Bailey.
Wilkinson, who is now at the major-league level, perhaps turned in his best performance against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are the best team in the National League West Division.
The Giants' left-handed rookie pitched five innings while allowing just three hits on six strikeouts, against one of the best lineups in all of baseball. Perhaps that is what stands out the most in what has been a solid rookie season for Wilkinson this season.
While many rookies, especially pitchers, find it difficult to transition from the minor leagues, Wilkinson has been one of the few to make that switch look manageable.
Across seven appearances and 24.2 innings this season, Wilkinson has impressed with a 3.65 ERA and a WHIP of 1.01. While in many cases this is considered a very small sample size, his ability to navigate lineups and do it effectively has been the biggest takeaway.
As the Giants head into the final weeks of the season, the hope is that Wilkinson is able to continue his growth as he likely will remain in the Giants rotation, especially given his performance against the Dodgers.
With the Giants out of the playoff race at this point in the season, there really isn’t anything at stake if there are any bumps in the road for Wilkinson. Especially when you are looking at younger pitchers the biggest thing for them is just racking up innings and doing it effectively.
If Wilkinson proves that he can do that at an efficient rate, it will certainly be interesting to see the growth that he makes towards the end of this year and the continuation of that heading into spring training next season. With rotation spots likely opening up next season, it will likely be very interesting to see how it plays in Wilkinson’s favor.
Again, the Giants seemingly have nothing to lose at this point in the year, and Wilkinson will likely be a factor in how their season plays out for the rest of the season.
He will certainly be given additional opportunities to take the mound, and with those opportunities, he will have the ability to prove what he can do well. He isn’t necessarily a pitcher with extreme velocity; his ability to get out and get them effectively is what makes him a reliable option this season.
The hope is that he can build upon that and continue to be an effective arm for the Giants for the remainder of the season.
