After blowing 26 saves, the San Francisco Giants must revitalize their relief corps and take a look at Pete Fairbanks.

If the San Francisco Giants want to do anything of note in 2027, they have to fix their bullpen.

This team had pitching issues across the board, but the bullpen blew 26 saves, and that's simply not a recipe for success.

All things considered, this year was a lost cause due to injuries, slumping veterans, and a massive trade deadline that saw this team move on from a ton of talent.

It was a necessary move to set them up for the future, and the future isn't going to be too bright if this bullpen once again posts a 4.25 ERA.

Finishing 20th in the league in that department shows how much room there is to grow, and that's where Pete Fairbanks comes into the mix.

Giants should go after Fairbanks

San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser gave the Giants a ton of starting pitchers to go after once free agency hits, but she also chimed in on some bullpen arms that would make sense to acquire.

A few of her top options may be a bit too expensive for Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey and Co., but if the Giants want to avoid another near-100-loss season, they can't sit around and do nothing.

Fairbanks, 32, was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and is expected to miss some of the 2027 season.

Injuries plagued his 2026 campaign, and that's a huge reason why he finished with a 6.31 ERA, his highest since 2019.

After a lengthy stint with the Tampa Bay Rays, Fairbanks stayed in the state of Florida as he was acquired by the Miami Marlins.

Miami doesn't seem too keen on extending him after they just paid $13 million for one year with those numbers.

Fairbanks was a -1.3 WAR player this season, so Giants fans may be asking themselves, how is that a player that is going to boost this bullpen?

As long as everything goes smoothly with his recovery, Fairbanks will be as good as new in 2027 and beyond.

There's no better time to buy in than now as his value is going to plummet not only because of his injury, but due to how poorly he played in '26.

Remember, Fairbanks only has a career 3.61 ERA, and he was a 0.8+ WAR player from 2022-2025.

The Wisconsin native is a monstrous 6-foot-6, and the Giants would be silly to turn down a relatively cheap bullpen option who picked up 19 saves in 46 appearances.

Slusser pointed out Fairbanks earns "bonus points" as he played at Missouri, which is manager Tony Vitello's alma mater.
