Shay Whitcomb’s walk-off heroics secured a gritty San Francisco Giants victory after a late bullpen collapse forced an extra-inning battle against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The San Francisco Giants have played a pair of 12-inning game this season, but this one marked their first 11-inning game of the year.

It was the deepest the Giants went into a ballgame since Sunday, May 10, and it's worth noting they are now 3-0 in games that have gone 11+ innings this season.

Despite having an early 3-0 lead on the St. Louis Cardinals, the Giants bullpen once again decided to make things interesting.

Logan Webb allowed just one earned run in a stellar six-inning outing. The run he allowed was a solo homer, and it was one of only three hits he gave up on Labor Day.

Dylan Smith's blown save put this game into extras, but both teams plated the ghost runner in the 10th inning, so an 11th was required.

Jason Foley improved to 3-1 on the year as he navigated both the 10th and 11th innings, paving the way for Shay Whitcomb to be the hero.

Whitcomb's ninth RBI this year secured Giants' 60th win

It wasn't the prettiest win in the world, but at the end of the day, a win is a win.

The Giants are now 60-85, but there was a lot to love about how they played in this one.

San Francisco put a run on the board right away in the bottom of the first inning, and then they added one more in the third and another in the fifth.

The now 72-73 Cardinals scored in the sixth, seventh, ninth, and 10th innings. Reiver Sanmartin was able to get out of Smith's jam in the ninth, so his five-pitch outing was crucial, as that strikeout allowed the Giants to eventually come out on top.

As for Whitcomb, he was one of three Giants with an RBI in this game. It marked just his ninth of the season and his first since August 27.

Four of those RBIs have come during his time with the Giants, which is a small 15-game sample size. He may only be hitting .152 this season, but no one can deny the California native's infield hit that sent the crowd home happy.

Oracle Park was also able to see Rafael Devers continue to do his thing as he added two more RBIs to his season total, which now sits at 92.

The 29-year-old had a two-hit, two-walk night, and it just so happens that both of those hits were doubles.
