After a brief but uneven tenure with the San Francisco Giants, Tyler Fitzgerald heads to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The San Francisco Giants have parted ways with utilityman Tyler Fitzgerald, trading him to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations.

The move comes shortly after the Giants designated Fitzgerald for assignment, signaling a shift in roster priorities as the season gets underway. Toronto, which had an open spot on its 40-man roster, optioned Fitzgerald to Triple-A following the deal.

Fitzgerald’s departure closes the chapter on a Giants tenure that began when the organization selected him in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. After a brief major-league debut in 2023, Fitzgerald appeared to establish himself the following season.

In 2024, he delivered a strong offensive campaign, hitting .280 with a notable combination of power and speed, including 15 home runs and 17 stolen bases. His production made him one of the more intriguing breakout contributors on the roster.

However, that success proved difficult to sustain. A significant drop in batting average on balls in play contributed to a sharp decline in 2025 as Fitzgerald struggled to find consistency at the plate.

His offensive numbers dipped considerably, and his role with the club diminished as the season progressed. After beginning the year as the team’s primary second baseman, he was optioned to Triple-A midseason and saw only limited action in the majors down the stretch.

Injuries also played a role in derailing his momentum. A rib issue early in the season interrupted what had been a promising start, and he was unable to regain that form upon returning to the lineup. From that point forward, Fitzgerald found himself cycling between the majors and minors, unable to reclaim a steady role.

Roster construction ultimately made his path in San Francisco even more difficult. The addition of Luis Arraez during the offseason solidified second base, leaving Fitzgerald without a clear opportunity for everyday playing time. With limited space available, the Giants opted to move on.

For Toronto, Fitzgerald represents a versatile depth piece capable of filling multiple roles across the infield. With a minor-league option remaining, he offers some flexibility in terms of roster availability.
