Following Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Arizona, Willy Adames expressed frustration over the San Francisco Giants being swept twice by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Francisco Giants were, once again, left searching for answers Wednesday after falling 3-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, completing another series sweep at the hands of a division rival that has consistently given them problems throughout the season.
Shortstop Willy Adames did not hide the frustration following the loss, describing the repeated struggles against Arizona as both disappointing and difficult to explain.
“It’s been tough to come on top against the D-backs,” Adames said. “They’ve been playing really good baseball against us. When you get swept twice by the same team, it’s embarrassing.”
The Giants had opportunities late to tie the game, including a critical eighth-inning sequence that ended with a runner being thrown out at the plate. Adames, who was involved in the play, said he was simply reacting in real time and following the coaching staff’s direction.
“I was just following the coach’s decision,” Adames said. “Unfortunately, we had that result at the plate and couldn’t tie the game there.”
The veteran infielder explained the difficulty of the play as it unfolded quickly off the bat, particularly after the outfielder charged the ball aggressively.
“It’s tough because the outfielder caught it right away,” Adames said. “After you see a drop, you’re just trying to go and expecting the best.”
Giants Continue to Search for Consistency
Despite the sweep, Adames noted the Giants have played improved baseball outside of their matchups with Arizona over the past several weeks. However, he admitted defensive mistakes and execution issues have continued surfacing at costly times.
“We just haven’t found a way,” Adames said. “Defense has been kind of the hardest part during those series.”
San Francisco has now struggled repeatedly against the Diamondbacks’ aggressive style of play, something Adames acknowledged has become increasingly frustrating for the clubhouse.
“They’re an annoying team,” Adames said. “They’ve got guys that can get into your head, and they can swing the bat.”
Even with the disappointment of another narrow defeat, Adames believes the solution comes down to tightening up fundamentals and avoiding self-inflicted mistakes.
“We just have to change and be better,” Adames said. “It’s disappointing.”
The Giants will attempt to regroup Friday as they continue searching for consistency following another difficult series against Arizona.
