The San Francisco Giants could not do enough to stop the Miami Marlins.
The San Francisco Giants fell to the Miami Marlins on Friday 4-3 at LoanDepot Park in Miami.
The loss marks the end of the Giants’ three-game winning streak, and they fell to 31-44 on the season. How did it happen?
Battling Early
Right-hander Landen Roupp got the starting nod for San Francisco on Friday, and the Marlins took advantage of his pitching early.
After Roupp forced a groundout, he gave up a solo home run to Marlins right fielder Owen Caissie. Roupp was able to get out of the inning via a fly out and another ground out, but the Giants were behind nonetheless.
However, a response was not far off.
In the top of the second inning, Willy Adames hit a lead-off single, and it was followed up by a single courtesy of Casey Schmitt. With Adames and Schmitt aboard the bases, Drew Gilbert reached first base on a successful bunt and loaded them.
With the bases full, Daniel Susac hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field that drove in Adames, which provoked Miami to go to its bullpen. One run is all the Giants would earn after Luis Arraez grounded into a double play that ended the frame, but it was enough to tie the game.
A Three-Inning Fight
In the third and fourth inning, both teams remained scoreless. Roupp had given up hits, but he received enough defensive support to not give up any more runs.
But in the bottom of the fifth inning, Roupp gave up a leadoff double to Javier Sanoja before Caissie struck again in the form of an RBI double to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.
Facing a small deficit again, the Giants responded once more. In the top of the sixth, Rafael Devers hit a leadoff solo home run to center field, marking his 11th of the season.
After Devers tied the game, Jung Hoo Lee hit a double. The momentum cooled down a bit when Adames struck out, but Schmitt delivered an RBI single to give the Giants their first lead of the night.
Roupp exited the game in the bottom of the seventh, and he was replaced by Sam Hentges. When Hentges took the mound, the Malins delivered their final blow.
Hentges started the frame by hitting Esteury Ruiz with a pitch before Sanoja reached on a bunt and Liam Hicks singled to right field to tie the game. Caissie was up to bat next, and like he had done all evening, converted for his team once again.
This time it was with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sanoja and capped off a two-run inning for Miami.
In the eighth and ninth innings, the Giants could not muster any hits, resulting in the end of a small winning streak.
