The San Francisco Giants were unable to hold on to a late lead Tuesday night in a 5-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but starting pitcher Landen Roupp still found positives in both his outing and the defensive support behind him.

Roupp battled through traffic for much of the evening and credited improved command for helping him navigate several difficult situations. While he admitted that he struggled at times to finish hitters off, the right-hander believed his overall execution was stronger compared to recent outings.

“I felt better,” Roupp said after the game. “The command was a lot better. I just couldn’t really put guys away, but I feel like I battled really well and got through some big jams.”

Arizona consistently applied pressure offensively, but San Francisco’s defense repeatedly stepped up to preserve the lead during the middle innings. Roupp made it clear that the infield played a major role in keeping him effective throughout the night.

“The defense was incredible today,” Roupp said. “They’re the reason why I pitched the way I did, so all the props to them.”

The Giants turned several momentum-shifting plays behind Roupp, including a pair of critical double plays that erased potential scoring opportunities for Arizona.

Roupp highlighted the work from the infield and bullpen, while specifically praising the athleticism and awareness shown on a difficult double-play sequence in the seventh inning.

“They played very good all around today,” Roupp said. “Obviously Rafi (Rafael Devers) had one that was all his, and then the double play Keaton (Winn) turned was huge.”

Roupp referred specifically to a difficult 6-4-1 double play that required precise timing and coordination between the infielders and pitcher covering first base. The play helped the Giants escape another dangerous inning and maintain control deep into the game.

“He made a pitch, and then getting over there was pretty tough,” Roupp explained. “Especially on a double play, you’ve got to run over there and then find the ball. He did a great job with that.”

Despite the strong defensive effort and quality pitching performance, the Giants were unable to close out the game after a chaotic ninth inning that included a controversial catcher’s interference call and several costly mistakes.

“It’s pretty unfortunate,” Roupp said of the loss. “But you’ve got to move on and come out tomorrow and play better baseball.”

The defeat marked another frustrating missed opportunity for San Francisco after leading for much of the night. Still, Roupp’s outing and the club’s defensive execution provided encouraging signs as the Giants look to rebound in the remainder of the series against Arizona.
