Behind Logan Webb and timely contributions from the offense, the San Francisco Giants salvaged the series finale with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
The San Francisco Giants entered Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs looking to avoid a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series. To get back on track, they turned to their ace, Logan Webb.
The Giants responded with one of their more complete performances of the series, defeating the Cubs 5-1 and salvaging the final game before Monday's off day.
Webb delivered another outstanding outing, continuing the strong stretch he established in his previous starts against the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals.
The right-hander earned his fourth win of the season and once again gave the Giants exactly what they needed.
Over eight innings, Webb allowed seven hits while striking out seven batters. The lone run he surrendered was unearned. He threw 106 pitches, 73 of which were strikes.
Webb had everything working throughout the afternoon, keeping the Cubs scoreless through seven innings. The performance continued a dominant stretch for the right-hander, particularly when it comes to generating strikeouts and consistently filling the strike zone.
The offense broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. The rally was highlighted by a two-run home run from Matt Chapman that gave the Giants a 3-0 lead.
San Francisco added another run in the seventh when Bryce Eldridge lined a single to left field, bringing home Chapman and extending the lead to 4-0.
The production from Chapman and Eldridge continued positive trends for both hitters. Eldridge, in particular, has become a significant offensive spark for the Giants, contributing both power and run production.
Perhaps most impressive has been Eldridge's ability to drive the ball to all fields while maintaining his power. Chapman has also continued to trend in the right direction offensively, showing improvement not only with his power numbers but also with his ability to reach base consistently.
The Cubs finally broke through in the eighth inning against Webb, though the run was ruled unearned.
The Giants quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning when Daniel Susac drove in another run to extend the lead to 5-1. Caleb Kilian then entered in the ninth and recorded the final out to secure the victory; he would not be credited with the save.
The Giants will be off on Monday before opening a series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Adrian Hauser is scheduled to start for San Francisco. He enters the matchup with a 2-6 record and a 5.54 ERA. The Braves are expected to counter with Grant Holmes, who owns a 4.05 ERA this season.
