RBI single from Matt Chapman in the 12th capped a resilient comeback as the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals.
The San Francisco Giants continued to find ways to win, grinding out a 7-6 extra-innings victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday behind timely hitting and late-game poise.
It was Matt Chapman who delivered the decisive moment, lining a go-ahead RBI single in the 12th inning to break a 6-6 tie. The hit proved to be the difference as San Francisco secured its third consecutive win in dramatic fashion.
The Giants’ offense showed flashes throughout the afternoon, highlighted by a standout performance from Heliot Ramos. Ramos collected three hits, including a game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth inning that erased a deficit and swung momentum back toward San Francisco.
His early double in the second inning also helped spark the offense, eventually leading to the club’s first run.
Despite the win, the Giants had to battle through adversity. A defensive miscue in the second inning opened the door for a multi-run frame by Washington, putting San Francisco in an early hole. Still, the Giants responded with resilience.
Casey Schmitt delivered a key extra-base hit in the third inning that brought in a run, while defensive pressure forced additional mistakes that allowed another run to cross the plate.
San Francisco continued to chip away as the game progressed. Rafael Devers added an RBI single in the seventh inning, giving the Giants a brief edge before the Nationals rallied to tie the game in the ninth.
Extra innings tested both teams, but the Giants’ pitching and defense held firm when it mattered most. A critical sequence in the 10th inning saw San Francisco escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam without allowing a run, preserving the tie and setting the stage for later heroics.
In the 12th, Chapman’s leadoff single finally broke through. From there, the Giants closed the door, with Caleb Kilian finishing the game and earning his first major league win.
With momentum building, the Giants now turn to Robbie Ray as they look to complete a series sweep, continuing a stretch of gritty, hard-fought baseball that has defined their recent success.
