Rain delay in Philadelphia forces the San Francisco Giants to reschedule a doubleheader for Thursday against Phillies.
The San Francisco Giants will have to wait an extra day to continue their series in Philadelphia after Wednesday night’s game was postponed due to persistent rain at Citizens Bank Park.
In an effort to get ahead of the weather, first pitch had been moved up earlier in the evening. However, steady rainfall throughout the forecast ultimately made conditions unplayable, forcing the postponement and reshaping both teams’ plans for the remainder of the series.
The game will be made up Thursday as part of a split doubleheader. The first contest is scheduled for an early afternoon start at 1:05 p.m., with the second game set for the evening at 5:35 p.m., creating a long day at the ballpark for the Giants and Philadelphia Phillies.
For the Giants, the adjustment means right-hander Logan Webb will take the ball in Game 1. Webb had originally been lined up to pitch Wednesday and now slides into the opening game, giving San Francisco its ace to set the tone.
What follows remains less certain. The Giants have yet to officially name a starter for Game 2, and several possibilities are on the table. Veteran Adrian Houser is a logical candidate to remain on turn and handle the second game, though the club could also explore a spot start from the minor leagues or piece together a bullpen game.
Roster flexibility will play a role in that decision. Under doubleheader rules, both teams will be permitted to add a 27th player, offering an opportunity to bring in a fresh arm to help cover innings. That added depth could prove valuable, especially if the Giants opt to spread the workload across multiple pitchers in the nightcap.
The rainout introduces an element of unpredictability into a series that already carries weight as the Giants look to maintain momentum. Doubleheaders can test pitching depth and bullpen durability, making execution across both games critical.
While the delay disrupts the original schedule, it also presents an opportunity. With Webb leading off Thursday’s action and additional roster flexibility available, the Giants will aim to navigate the condensed slate and come away with a strong showing before departing Philadelphia.
