Robbie Ray delivered strong outing for San Francisco Giants, while Rafael Devers showed signs of breaking out against Pittsburgh Pirates.
The San Francisco Giants opened their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with an impressive 5-2 victory, powered by another quality performance from veteran left-hander Robbie Ray.
Ray worked six innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits. The left-hander issued four walks but consistently overpowered Pittsburgh hitters throughout the evening, finishing with seven strikeouts while throwing 93 pitches, including 59 strikes.
Although the walks were slightly elevated, Ray’s ability to generate swings and misses remained one of the biggest positives from the outing. He has steadily been one of the Giants’ most reliable starters this season and, once again, gave San Francisco a strong opportunity to secure a win.
Rafael Devers Showing Signs of Heating Up
Offensively, Rafael Devers provided one of the biggest highlights of the night when he launched his fourth home run of the season during the second inning.
The homer could represent an important turning point for the Giants' lineup as Devers has slowly begun to find his rhythm after a sluggish start to the year. The star slugger also collected two hits in the contest, another encouraging development for a San Francisco offense that has searched for consistency throughout the season.
Despite entering the game with a .221 batting average, .265 on-base percentage, and .329 slugging percentage, Devers remains one of the Giants’ most important offensive pieces. If he begins to produce at a higher level, then the lineup could become significantly more dangerous moving forward.
Heliot Ramos added another run during the fourth inning after scoring on an RBI single, helping the Giants gradually build momentum offensively.
Bullpen Continues to Deliver
San Francisco’s bullpen once again proved to be a major strength.
Keaton Winn handled the seventh inning and retired hitters effectively while continuing to solidify himself as one of the club’s more dependable relief arms. Matt Gage followed with a clean eighth inning, working around a walk to maintain the Giants’ advantage.
The offense then broke the game open in the seventh inning. Drew Gilbert delivered an RBI single before Luis Arraez added a two-run single that extended the lead to 5-1.
Caleb Killian closed out the victory but struggled with his command, throwing 35 pitches within the inning and walking two batters. He limited the damage, allowing just one earned run.
Although he struggled, Killian has emerged as one of the Giants’ top bullpen weapons, posting a stellar 1.59 ERA while helping anchor one of the better relief units in Major League Baseball.
The Giants finished with 12 hits in the victory, an encouraging sign for an offense that has struggled to consistently generate run support this season.
San Francisco currently sits at 15-23 and in fifth place in the National League West. The Giants are expected to send Landon Roupp to the mound on Saturday against Pittsburgh right-hander Braxton Ashcraft.
